Custom Selections in Smart Discover
When adding a hierarchy to the discovery, you have the option to make a Custom Selection of items (called elements) from your hierarchy, rather than including all elements. You can select individual items one-by-one from within the hierarchy using the checkboxes, select a formulation to include its items, or select both to create your final list.
This example shows how, when adding the Manufacturer hierarchy, you can select four of the hierarchy's elements that you are interested in and any other elements that begin with "O" from a Custom List.
Alternatively, you may want to use a filter to select elements dynamically based on a particular filter type (for example, the top 4 Manufacturers by Cost). For more information, see Filtered Selections in Smart Discover.
Making a Custom Selection
Step 1: Locate a Hierarchy
To make a custom selection, start by finding the required hierarchy within its dimension:
Tip: You can use the search field to enter a search term and look for required items (in this case, the Manufacturers hierarchy) on the open tab.
Step 2: Select a subset of items
- Click the hierarchy's arrow to open its submenu (orange arrow below).
- At the top of the Filter panel, click the Custom arrow (yellow arrow).
- Select the elements you want to include in your discovery:
- Select individual elements from the hierarchy using the checkboxes. The following example shows four elements selected from the Manufacturer hierarchy: Acme, Old Balance, Ribuck, and Slicenger.
- Navigate to and select a formulation from the tree (green highlight) to include its items. Additional elements are selected from the Custom List Manufacturers - "O": Old Balance and Over Armour.
- Once you've made your selections, click OK.
The Filter panel opens.
The Custom Selections menu opens.
Note: When individual elements and formulations are selected together, they are combined into a single list. Where the same item appears in both lists, the element only appears once in the final selection.
Sort the Result
In the preceding example, there is an additional arrow alongside the name of the hierarchy (purple arrow above). Click this arrow to open the Sort submenu, where you can dictate how to sort your elements (alphabetical, reverse alphabetical, and so on). For more information about sorting filtered hierarchies, see Sorting Hierarchies in Smart Discover.
Result
The Manufacturer chip is added to the Select Item bar, and the custom selections are added to the discovery:
Note: The elements selected at Step 2 affect both the visual and its legend (green highlight below). The Custom Selection results in a total of five Manufacturer elements: four selected individually, two selected using a custom list, with one element (Old Balance) overlapping between the selections and the list.
